AGRARIAN OUTRAGES.
(United Ireland, June 6.) Theee are Borne subjects, Oliver Wendell Holmes says, on which a man with a properly constituted mind and heart ought to go mad, We confess we cannot think or write with patience of the dastardly and wanton cruelty of the agrarian outrages at this moment being perpetrated in Kerry. It is not Captain Moonlight, but Mr. George Sandes, the agent of my Lord Orroathwaite, that is guilty of this cold-blooded cruelty. He wears no black crape over his face. He doee hiß torturing in the noonday, with the guardians of the law ready to back him, if it need be, with their bayonets. There is no wild fear or mad vengeance in his heart, only a tranquil hope that the five per cent, commission on collected rents may be wrung by torture from an impoverished tenantry, or in default that they may be removed, in Carey's sense or otherwise, it matters not, to make room for others who can pay. Do Englishmen know, can they realise the wanton crnelty thaMs being perpetrated in Ireland under the sanction of the laws. We do them th« justice to hope not. No one knows tbe horror of an eviction who has not seen it. Words are not strong enough to tell it j one strives vainly to get it into words. Families turned oat homeless on the roadside — old and young ; haggard old cripples, bent doable with ag:e, and wailing young babies at the breast of gaunt women, all huddled together in helpless, h ipeless misery, watching the roof that shsl tered them go down under the bailiff's crowbars. It sounds like wild hyperbole ; it is the plain truth. It is less tban the plain truth. What word i can tell the hunger and pain that racks these ehrnnken frames ; the hopeless misery that is in these sad hearts, misery intensified by the companionship of all they love. It is as incredible as it is true.
