Earliest Known History of the Family

Cumberland. An early map by Henry Teesdale

Burgh-on-Sands, Cumberland

The earliest known members of the Sandes family were "The Barons of Burgh" at Burgh-on-Sands in Cumberland in the 13th Century. The Barony of Burgh passed from the Engayne Family to the De Morvilles in the time of King Henry II (reign 1154 - 1189) and from them to the De Multons. The arms of the Sandys Family are derived from those of the Engaynes' family crest.
